GDS Instruments

GDS designs, develops and manufactures equipment and software used for the computer-controlled testing of soils and rocks. This technology is used to evaluate the mechanical properties that are key in geotechnical and earthquake engineering design.

GDS’s products have been used in many world renowned developments including the Three Gorges Dam in China, the Millau Viaduct in France, the Vasco da Gama Bridge in Portugal and closer to home Terminal Five at Heathrow and the new Crossrail links. 

GDS’s products are used by top research institutes throughout the world, including the Indian Institute of Technology, Colorado School of Mines in the USA and the Hamburg University of Technology in Germany. In 2011 GDS were awarded the coveted Queens Award for Enterprise in International Trade.

Ian Ayling

Managing Director

Ian has over 25 years’ experience in commercial and technical leadership roles, most recently as Chief Sales Officer with National Oilwell Varco (NOV). Prior to NOV, he had an extensive international career with Baker Hughes across a diverse portfolio of products and services including subsea technologies, well completions, and geoscience, supporting traditional oil and gas projects, gas hydrates, and more recently projects related to the energy transition such as offshore wind, rare earth minerals, and biogas. 

Ian holds a BEng in Electronic and Electrical Engineering from the Robert Gordon University (Aberdeen) and an MBA from Heriot-Watt University (Edinburgh). He has also enjoyed continuing leadership development at the Business Leadership Institute, the Thunderbird Business School (Arizona), and the Institute of Directors. Additionally, he has contributed several papers through the Society of Petroleum Engineers and holds two patents related to gas hydrate production.

Ian became Managing Director of GDS in 2025.
